A gang who used a tracking device to bug men they tried to m••der have been jailed after detectives used the equipment to hunt them down instead. The detective leading the investigation said those who become involved in organised crime should be prepared to pay the penalty, following the conclusion of Operation Filtergate at Leeds Crown Court. Operation Filtergate Nine men were sentenced to in excess of a combined 114 years in jail at the court on Friday April 23 for their roles in an incident in Liversedge in 2019 in which two men were shot in a car while in supermarket car park. The men had placed a tracker on the victim’s car which detectives were able to examine using innovative digital media investigation techniques, in order to identify members and unravel the conspiracy. The incident itself took place during the evening of November 4, 2019 and resulted in two men, then aged 27 and 22, receiving gun-shot wounds after being shot at while they were in a car. The shooting sparked a major police investigation by the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team and the force’s F•rea•ms Prevent Team who identified g•ng members and pieced together their movements after locating the tracker. As a result of enquires it was determined the sh•ot•ng of the two men had been co-ordinated by Umar Ditta who had taken care to try and put distance between himself and the crime. He had arranged for the tracker to be accessed by phone from Aadil Malik from within prison where he was already serving a sentence for other fi•earms off•nces. On Thursday, 6 May officers from Specialist Crime carried out the operation in Arctic House, Colindale. A 41-year-old man was arrested outside the building in possession of around 1kg of cocaine; officers gained entry to his home address inside Arctic House. On searching the address a further 80kgs of co•aine and around £400,000 in cash were discovered. A second man, aged 29, was also arrested after being found inside the address. Both men were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and remain in custody. An •rmed ro•ber who targeted two banks and a post office in Redbridge has been jailed. Steven Ifield, 52 , Hornchurch appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 30 April. He was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment. Eight people have been arrested as part of a National Crime Agency operation targeting a suspected network of cash couriers responsible for laundering more than £50 million in criminal profits. Officers carried out the raids this morning (Tuesday 11 May) at locations in London, Surrey, West Yorkshire, and Greater Manchester. The three men and five women arrested are alleged to be cash couriers responsible for hiding large amounts of cash in luggage on commercial flights to Dubai from Heathrow or Manchester airports. On each occasion the alleged couriers flew out with large amounts of checked in baggage. Days later they would return with fewer cases. The investigation began after the seizure of around £1.9 million from outbound passenger Tara Hanlon, aged 30, from Leeds, at Heathrow in October 2020 Two men from the north west have been convicted after attempting to smuggle 243 kilos of cocaine into the UK on an empty passenger coach. The National Crime Agency investigated Christopher Bullows and Mark Tucker after the coach was stopped at Dover Docks in September 2020. Bullows was driving the vehicle, and Tucker was his only passenger. Husam Yafai and Worum Gatkouth were arrested on 12 January this year, after a Volkswagen Golf was stolen the previous night from a property in Wheelers Lane, Kings Heath. The VW was spotted on Exeter Street in Birmingham city centre, and our officers moved in to block the car. Gatkouth, who was sitting in the driver seat, ran into a nearby shop and ditched his jacket. He was quickly arrested and the jacket recovered. The fob for the stolen car was in his pocket. Yafai was sat in the back of the car, and during a police search officers recovered cannabis, a balaclava and gloves as well as a loaded sawn-off shotgun in the footwell. The gun was in the same bag which can be seen in a video that Yafai posted to Snapchat hours earlier, with the caption: “Straps (guns) out. No gloves, ain’t no time to be careful." Gatkouth, 21, had heroin and cocaine on him. He later claimed he was being forced to drive the stolen car, despite video recovered from his mobile phone showing him rapping as he was driving around the city centre.
